The project will benefit 5,823 people in 9 communities between Mapai and Mabalane District. In order to assist the mentioned communities in the implementation of this project, Peace Parks Foundation is looking for a Community Development Coordinator, based in Mapai District, to work in collaboration with Limpopo National Park (LNP) and Banhine National Park (BNP) staff for the implementation of the project.

Job Purpose The Community Technician will be based in Mapai District, and will play a role in managing livelihood initiatives, with a focus on agriculture projects along the Ecological Linkage between Limpopo National Park and Banhine National Park. The primary objective is to support and implement sustainable agricultural and livestock practices aligned with the NaturAfrica project’s goals.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in rural development, climate change adaptation, biodiversity conservation, organic farming, irrigation (including drip irrigation), agroforestry, livestock development, integrated agriculture-livestock systems, and rural water access.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Support and implement agricultural and agroforestry strategies as outlined in the project document, following recommendations approved by the Project Manager.
  • Develop and implement a training package (Climate Smart Agriculture) for the farmers’ association (Trainers of trainees)
  • Oversee Lead farmers engaged in both irrigated schemes and dryland farming (Climate Smart Agriculture practice).
  • Liaise with the Mozambique Wildlife Association in the process of identifying the six selected farmers to be fenced as part of the Human-Wildlife Coexistence.
  • Assist in the process of revitalization, training, and legalization of at least 10 Natural Resources Management Committees along the Ecological Linkage;
  • Monitor agricultural campaigns and prepare for agricultural and livestock fairs, including voucher system management.
  • Act as a liaison between local communities, district government services in Mapai and Mabalane, and Local NGOs.
  • Collaborate with district livestock departments to implement livestock and integrated agriculture-livestock activities, working closely with the Technical Assistant and Herding for Health teams.
  • Work closely with the Community Development Programme Team to identify an appropriate mechanism for a compensation scheme for farmers affected by Human Wildlife Coexistence along the core corridor area;
  • Support the creation of other alternative income-generating initiatives and work with the Safeguards and Gender Officer to identify and support vulnerable groups;
  • Work with the District Authorities to identify the location for the water point system.

Additional Duties

  • Train community farmers in climate-smart agriculture and crop protection techniques.
  • Revitalize, train, and legalize Natural Resources Management Committees.
  • Prepare and submit monthly narrative and technical reports.
  • Provide regular feedback on field activities.
  • Contribute to technical evaluations and produce communication materials for dissemination.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum of five years’ experience in agricultural projects.
  • Degree in Agriculture, Livestock, Agroforestry, Animal Science, Natural Resources Management, or related field (preferred).
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Fluency in Portuguese (written and spoken) and practical English; knowledge of Chongane is an advantage.
  • Experience in natural resource management, land use, and local development.
  • Familiarity with subsistence farming systems, agricultural production, and community-based resource management is highly desirable.
  • Valid driver’s license.
